What you need: Good pair of rubber gloves, old clothes, 2metres of strong twine, length of wood around 300mm long, small container, plastic bucket, cloths, large adjustable wrench.

What to do:

Firstly it is a good idea to fill a bucket with fresh water. Just in case. Then, remove the heavy lid from the top of the cistern and put it out of the way in a safe place. Now locate and lift the float that sits in the cistern and lay the wood across the top of the cistern and with the twine tie and suspend the float in the up position so it can’t drop so it stops any water from filling the cistern.
